Villa Takis, Pelekas Beach - local information
Pelekas is located on the west coast of Corfu, directly opposite - and 13 kilometres from - Corfu Town with its port and airport. There is a regular bus service from Pelekas to the centre of Corfu Town which takes about 30 minutes.
There are two different sides to Pelekas - the beach and the village. (There is a free minibus service throughout the day between the village and the beach, as well as the nearby beach of Glyfada.)
Pelekas Beach (also known as Kontogialos) is at the bottom of a hill and consists of three tavernas, a five star hotel and a selection of rooms and villas.
There are a couple of mini-markets and it is quite possible to have a quiet time chilling out on the beach and enjoying your own company over a meal and a bottle of wine in the evening, without ever going to the village. There is a long expanse of golden sand which slopes gently into the sea. You can hire sun beds and umbrellas and enjoy traditional Corfiot dishes or fresh grilled fish in the tavernas.
The village of Pelekas is on the side of the hill above the beach. There is a hotel right at the top and beneath it, around the two village squares there are restaurants, bars and rooms for rent. The bars all play music and there is one with a couple of pool tables and a large screen for televised sports. Although it caters for tourists it has little in common with the brash resorts often associated with Corfu.
It is a relaxed environment, virtually untouched by package tourism, and many people have been coming here since it was a "hippy paradise" in the 70s and 80s.
Even in the high season Pelekas is never packed, although the beaches can get a bit busy in the middle of August.
Its location means that it benefits from the most amazing sunsets, which combined with the beach's shallow water and the views from the top of the village across Corfu to the snow-capped mountains of the Greek mainland, make it a unique place to spend a holiday.
